About Ravel - by Brandi Armstrong

Joseph-Maurice Ravel born March 7, 1875, was a French composer of Impressionist music known for his melodies, orchestral and instrumental textures and effects.

Ravel had his first foreign tours to England and Scotland during 1909 and 1911. He considered becoming an aviator, but during World war was not allowed to enlist because of his age and weak health. After his mother’s death during 1917 and his fondest relationship collapsing he fell into a “horrible despair”, adding to his ill health.

But in 1928 he had a four-month concert tour in North America. In New York he received a standing ovation, unlike any of his premieres in Paris. After returning to France, Ravel composed his most famous and controversial orchestral work Boléro. Years later a Hollywood film titled Bolero (1934), used his theme.

During 1932, Ravel suffered a blow to the head in a taxi accident; afterwards he began to experience absentmindedness. He had begun work on music for a film, Adventures of Don Quixote(1933), but became unable to compose, because he could not write down the musical ideas in his head. During late 1937, Ravel had brain surgery and awoke from the surgery, but soon collapsed into a coma and died shortly afterwards at the age of 62, in December 28, 1937.
