MICHELLE OBAMA DOESN'T NEED TO DRESS LIKE OPRAH WINFREY

Published On 11-15-2008 , 2:53 PM

QUITE frankly, I'd rather not write about the soon to be occupants of the house on Pennsylvania Avenue in the District of Columbia but the public interest in our first African American family moving into the White House dictates otherwise.

The Obamas. The Obamas. It seems everyone has something to say about them. Most of the commentary that comes my way centers on pride, excitement and an understanding that not only is there a mission to be accomplished but also that the family's every move is going to be scrutinized.

That's all well and good, but as life's lessons teach us, there's always some amount of nonsense in anything that's good and positive.

This time around I call 'em a bunch of silly women who need to stop blogging and filling e-mail boxes with offers of help, in whatever way they can, to improve Michelle Obama's appearance.

What nerve!

Some of this junk mail even includes criticism regarding what "the girls" are wearing. Why, you ask, am I giving this negative stuff exposure here?

First, I thought it was only my African-American sisters who were carrying on with the nonsense because, generally speaking as a group, we think we're supposed to outdress even the Queen.

But then came the blog, and maybe a Sistah wrote it, since writing doesn't come in color, however from the tone, I suspected otherwise. Anyway, this blogger was concerned about the black and red dress worn on election night and had further commentary regarding the daughter who was dressed in black for such a festive occasion.

Leave the family alone!

While I do not love the dresses that Michelle wears, she's not dressing for me or the rest of the public. She looks fine.

As I note, her clothes are downplayed so that we're not fixated on her outfits. The fashion statement I see is being "Ms. It" is not as important to her as what she has to say. And when she talks she says what we need to hear.

What are these "bitchy" women looking for? Maybe another Sarah Palin focus on wardrobe?

Here's 10 points to consider before condemning Michelle:

1. She is not heavy laden with expensive jewelry!

2. No one has mentioned seeing unsightly spots on her clothes!

3. No comments are out there about a slip hanging or bra strap showing!

4. There's no looking at Michelle and saying to oneself "I wish I could afford that outfit."

5. She dresses like a professional mom and wife who has a million other things to do other than be "Ms. Fashionista."

6. She portrays, whether true or not, that she does her own shopping and it is simple because as Palin pointed out - there's no time to shop.

7. On Jay Leno, Michelle had on a nice outfit that she said she got online from J. Crew. It is said she also shops at Target where so many other "non-elite" women shop.

8. Nobody is writing about President-elect Obama saying he buys five suits all the same so when one part goes bad he can switch things around.

9. Just because Oprah, the diva, keeps the chatter going on the $2,000 shoes she's wearing, that's not what we should be looking for as the standard.

10. Women who are moms and also professionals generally don't spend an inordinate amount of time being "real cute." Using time wisely, and they must, children come before shopping, fitting rooms and styling.

Michelle has said, and has said so emphatically, that she is going to be The First Mom and not so much The First Lady.

The First Mom must appeal to the rank and file and not the carriers of Gucci bags. The First Mom, I suspect is going to help all moms realize the need is to concentrate on their children's education, both at school and at home, and not fret about what designer labels the public gets to see them sporting.

2. Hear, Hear! I just said similar words to a bunch of small-minded women on a blog I saw on Yahoo mail. So now it begins, eh? Get over it people! Get a life! Mrs. Obama dresses very well; just take a look at the latest issue of People Magazine; look at the many email videos and picture albums that show her so elegantly. She looks GREAT! She has STYLE! She dresses beautifully and, as all other president's wives, I'm sure she will continue to dress even more beautifully as the years go by. What will be the next critique--the color of her lipstick?
