It just happened without a plan. Well, maybe there was one..... this just plain 'ol emerged because the mothers in our class at the prison were so excited about the idea of reading books to their kids. Greta Pruitt brought books for her presentation and then she donated them. Then Barbara McKenzie-Slater brought books from the public library for her presentation and then..... Now we have people donating books for the children of our recently released moms. Join the CAUSE.
Clean your kids' bookshelves like Peggy Lewis did and send the books to us. We'll get them into the hands of our class participants, and some we'll donate some to the prison library. As quiet as it's kept, our moms love reading kids' books! Desmond Tuttu's book on forgiveness was a big hit.

Overheard on the elevator as a mother rubbed her little boy's arm after he got his flu shot: "Now, you won't get the flu and if you do, it won't be bad." The older man pushing the elevator button commented, "Now, isn't he lucky with THAT for his major problem."

Who is Myrna Raeder?.......
Without fail, every mom in attendance wants the best for her children. The problem is, in part, that the women haven't much of a clue as to how to exchange the lifestyle they've experienced for the one that is necessary when leading their kids to the university. Using and selling drugs became her way of life. That's what she knew and that's what she did.....More >>>

On the road again! Reaching out to service clubs, churches, talk shows and everywhere else we can spread the word about the work we do with parents and particularly our work with incarcerated moms.
Recently I did a little stand-up comedy with the Flintridge Reintegration Council's Comedy and Coffee. Also, I appeared in the Belly Room at the Comedy Store in Hollywood.
While parenting is serious business, if you can't find the laughs along the way, you'll be in serious trouble.
Prior to launching our non-profit, Talk About Parenting with Shirlee Smith, I spent 5 years on the "road" as a stand-up comedian. My material - PARENTING!
