The San Gabriel Valley Democratic Club hosted their annual celebration which included an oratorical contest, which our CEO, Shirlee Smith participated in, and was awarded 3rd place. The prize was the book "Quiet" by Susan Cain (http://www.thepowerofintroverts.com)
"A prize truly meant for the time." Smith commented, as the summer months are a time for reflection, planning and strengthening our organization.

CEO, Smith now attends the Incarcerated Parents Working Group meetings chaired by The Honorable Marguerite Downing of the Children's Court. Time well spent listening and learning. Information gained will be posted on our website upon obtaining permission from the court.

At a recent workshop "Your Kids, Your Money," the following Facebook exchange was discussed. Kid #1 had a Facebook post that showed a photo of an expensive Pokeman character he had purchased. Kid #2 responded to the post saying, "Boy, you must be rich to afford that!" Kid #1 answered, "No, I saved my money." Kid #2 responded again, "Saving? What dark magic dost thou speaketh?" Parents commented that it's so true that kids being taught to save money is almost obsolete nowadays.... click here to see clips of workshop.

It's been a year full of challenges, but there's nothing new about that. Our classes for incarcerated mothers at California Institution for Women continue to be our main focus. 177 women signed up for our last session that ran February through June.
We expanded the number of classes offered, but still have a long "wait" list. If you are interested in presenting at our Saturday prison classes and you have expertise in the areas of parent/child bonding, same sex parenting, or accessing resources, please contact us. Classes begin November 9, 2013 and run through June 2014.
Summertime for our organization is a focus on visibility. Maybe this is called outreach? No. It's for us being visible to the community.
No longer producing our cable television show, and with the sunset of the LA Times/ Pasadena Sun, it also means no more Shirlee's Common Sense newspapers column. This should equates to us meeting people eye-to-eye and in person!

Volunteer Spotlight Neha Shinde is a graduate of UCLA with a Bachelor of Science in Physiological Science and a minor in Comparative Literature. She recently returned from a volunteer service for two years with the US Peace Corps in Nicaragua, Central America. She is fluent in Spanish and, of course, English. Neha says her volunteer assignment with our organization's prison project has provided her a good inside look into the employment she is seeking in the fields of social work and public health. She plans eventually, to apply for graduate school in one of these two fields. |
