KCET Local Heroes Award Gala at Club Nokia.....

The KCET/ Union Bank Cultural Diversity Celebration was held at Club Nokia on October 23, and broadcast in November and December. Twelve Local Heroes, including Shirlee were honored. Our guests who attended the gala included former Board Members Adelaide Hixon and Greta Pruitt; current Board Members Evelin Garcia, PhD and Tina Wallin; Board Member Emeritus, retired UCLA professor Ivan Light, PhD; Guillermo Garcia, Warden, California Institution for Women, and his wife Sandra; Dorothy Garcia and husband Tom Harding (Aids Art Project); Penny and Ken Yannayon; Constance Anderson, Regional Business Center; Pia Smith; Virgil Roberts, Esq.; and Victor Muschetto.

"As the father of two adult sons, I have firsthand experience of the challenges and rewards involved in raising two young men. I feel fortunate and proud to say my sons became productive successful members of society. Credit for their success goes to the good parenting role models in my life and to the efforts and practices my wife and I put in play as young parents. My wife and I are thankful we matured and learned from our experiences to do a better job with our boys. However, I am well aware not all parents have been exposed to good parenting skills. My observations in general, and as a warden in particular, tell me there is a great need to have every parent learn how to do a better job with their children. I see the results of bad parenting skills in the men and women behind prison walls."

2012 was a fantastic year. With the help of dedicated volunteers and interns, we've made tremendous strides. Siew Tan tops the list when it comes to dedication - she has been with Talk About Parenting for 7 years! Joyce Lin, Administrative Assistant, keeps the office running. The team of students from USC, Marshall School of Business, designed fundraising strategies and a social media plan. Michael Oh, one of the graduating seniors, is now working as a financial planner and is still involved with us.
Eric Flores and Viridianna Aguilar from University of La Verne, provided research on California State Prisons. Nora Marin, assistant for our parenting classes at California Institution for Women, took her assignment a step further and presented our organization to her Criminal Justice class at Chaffey College.
We are looking forward to an exciting 2013. Happy New Year to everyone!

Volunteer Spotlight Welcome new board members, Evelin Garcia, Paul Smith, Don Repella and Peggy Sisson. Without strong committed board members we'd be a flop. Evelin was a guest on Talk About Parenting Live. Paul is a new dad of a 4-week-old son. Peggy has recently retired as Director of Child Care with City of Pasadena, and Don Repella is the father of two young sons.
